Tonight, as part of the ESPN sports film festival, I witnessed with my own two eyes on ESPN a documentary about the Oakland basketball player Hook Mitchell. The documentary starts out with commentary from Jkidd and Gpayton who both agree that Hook was the best ever from Oakland. He gained fame by doing 360s over cars, and jumping over humans. They showed grainy footage of this and I must say, that shit was incredible.
But one of the parts that struck me the most was when they were talking about how Hook couldn't stay out of trouble, and how every city in America has a "Hook" Mitchell; a out of this world talent who couldn't stay out of trouble. I remember back in high school in Beaverton, I kept hearing about this tennis player named Round The Way Ron. Everyone would always talk about him and how he was the best player who wasn't playing on the junior circuit. And one day, I was playing tennis in the park, and I saw this guy who was like 6-4 hitting serves and I immediately recognized him. He looked like Paul Bunyan. I said "hello" and said my name. He had a certain aura about him and then he asked if I wanted to play a match. I said yeah, and he beat me 6-1. I don't know what happened to him, but I heard he had gotten a d-1 scholarship somewhere.
