Influential Books in my Life: Moneyball

FILE UNDER: Random (submit this)

This is the beginning of an on going series about books and literature that has influenced my life. I will discuss the book and how it has impacted my life. The first book I would like to talk about today is Moneyball, written by Michael Lewis. It is a beautiful book written about the Oakland A's. Just in case you have been hiding under a rock for the last three years, the Oakland A's are a baseball team. The book investigates why the Oakland A's, with a payroll so low that I could bankroll the team, can compete with teams that have much more money than they do. The answer is in the genius that is Billy Beane. I can relate to Beane because being a stock broker myself, I look at market inefficiencies and shit like that. Beane took a lot of ideas that baseball people took for granted and threw them on their head. He valued on base percentage and not steals. The book CHRONICles a season in the A's. I've applied theories of Moneyball in the following ways relating to my real life:

Moneyball Poker: I came up with this invention a couple years ago in NY, and it has been unbeatable, just ask Chris. My ideas of poker are also highly influenced by the counter running game that teams run in the NFL (or at least the counter play is in Madden games). I cannot fully divulge these secrets, just ask Chris how it feels to lose money to this theory.

Moneyball Weed Smoking: I have found that the market is inefficient when it comes to schwag or however you spell the slang term for shit weed. But for me, weed is weed and being high is being high, so much like signing Scott Hattenberg to a contract like Beane does in the book, I buy shit weed in high qualities for cheap. This way, when I get high off this shit weed, it increases the market value of the weed.

Moneyball Hollering at Bitches: Every year, there is a new girl that comes along and is girl that everyone talks about. I don't try hollering at these bitches, I go for ugly ass ones that I don't have to spend a lot of money on. But I justify hollering at ugly bitches by saying things like "she got big titties tho," because for me, something like big titties are the equivalent to on base percentage. Well, maybe not big titties, since the market highly values big titties. Maybe something like "she's got an STD" or some shit, but I try to find something different in girls. And this idea can be very versatile. For example, if you are chilling with friends and one of your friends hooks up with a fat girl, you can be like "What did the market value today, a pregnant lookin girl?"

That's all I can think of for now. But bottom line, that book was dope.
