After a family member of Jake's recommended the MMA movie "Never Back Down," I decided to go watch it. I thought overall the movie was wack. The main character, whose name is also consequently Jake, didn't deserve his victory at the end. Although his striking improved drastically from the opening of the movie, I don't think that in 3 weeks trained by Djimon Honsou, that you can strike like Cung Le. This man didn't know how to throw more than a right hook, and all of the sudden, he's coming in with spinning back fists. His grappling was terrible. He had no take down defense to speak of, and if he had fought someone of a better caliber, it would have been GSP-Serra II all over again. I do give him credit for applying a sick triange off the hood of a car. That was quality. The bad guy of the movie deserved to win that match; he was obviously a better fighter than Jake, and saw a weakness in his ribs and began to attack it. If Big John McCarthy were reffing the match, I believe he would have stopped it and the bad guy would have gotten his hand raised. I must keep perspective: these two fighters were only 18 years old, so I think they just need to keep training and fighting in illegal underground tournaments to improve their game, and maybe in two years, they could go fight in the IFL. They do live in Orlando, so maybe over the summer they should join American Kickboxing Academy with Ben Saunders from TUF Season 5. And what was up with Djimon just packing up and leaving the gym behind? You can't do that. Imagine if Pat Miletich left Iowa one day never to return. Actually, thinking about it more, both fighters had decently well rounded games, so maybe they should go fight at Miletich to take their game to the next level.
