I feel that it's important to remember the past, as Papa Wu said so beautifully on the Ghostface track "All That I Got Is You," you have to know where you been to know where you are going. With that said, today I'm talking about former Portland Trail Blazers Dontonio Wingfield. According to Wikipedia, Dontonio was born on June 23rd, 1974, in Albany, Georgian. That is almost 10 years to the day I was born, so that's an immediate connection right there. Now, Dontonio played a big role in my development as a human being. I remember Dontonio (or the "Big D" as I used to call him, no homo) back from his days with Portland Trail Blazers. He was the Dirk Nowitski of the Trail Blazers, a player who caused problems on offense due to his height and his abilities, including shooting. I remember going to a Blazer game, where I think we were blowing out some team by 20 and he stepped onto the court and hit a trey with a minute left. We all stood up and cheered the effort. Even though he only scored 423 points in 114 NBA games, I always thought he was better than that, and way before his time. If they could do that 1994 draft all over again, surely he would go late first round, somewhere between Bill Curley and Dickey Simpkins.
